A few months ago a few of my gaming friends, separated by a thousand miles, expressed interest in the revised Warmaster game. If you aren’t familiar, this was an “Epic” scale game released by Games Workshop in the early 2000s that didn’t hang around a long time. And it slept, only played by a very few people who had both the rules and compatible figures.

In the past few years, a fan-based revision to the rules has arisen, and you can download them for free. They’ve made changes/corrections, and adjusted and added to the existing army lists. I’ve printed out a copy for easy reading.

For figures, people have relied on old GW scuplts (though increasingly expensive to obtain), other companies’ metal figures, and the recent expansion of 3D printing as an option, especially the Forest Dragon model designs. By coincidence, this year Wargames Atlantic has recently released their first 10mm Warmaster-compatible plastic figures – their Orc Horde!

So, of course, I had to get a box for myself.

I painted them on the sprue, using almost entirely Army Painter Speed Paints. They took little time to complete, and it wasn’t long before I got to use them in a game of Warmaster Revolution.

Their next army will be Dwarves, so I guess that’ll be mine too!

It looks like a great start, but it doesn’t look like they’ll be making figures for Warhammer-style dwarfs any time soon. These are more generic, probably closer to what might be found in book version Lord of the Rings dwarves by their appearance.

Knowing this, I snatched up a Troll Slayers blister for sale for a mere $10 from a seller at the Historicon flea market.
We don’t have a date yet for the Wargames Atlantic release, but it should be in a month or so. In the meantime, I’ll work on other things, like terrain, some 3D print Ogres and Trolls for my Orc Army, and maybe those Troll Slayers.
